Mark Epstein 

Born in St Louis, Missouri, Mark Epstein (1944- ) attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in St Louis (1964-66) and attained his BFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1969. He graduated with a MA in painting at the University of California at Berkley in 1970. He has had artwork exhibited at the San Francisco Art Institute and the San Francisco Museum of Art.

About his 1973 exhibition at the Roswell Museum, Epstein explained: “My work is made up of simple elements—shape, color, and line—which come together to create an ordered environment in each picture. A painting begins as a momentary impression of my surroundings. As an image develops, the forms and colors are moved and changed as they begin to require their own balance, or the tension of imbalance. Some of the forms are physically built upon the surface of the canvas, while others remain illusions. The order created by these pictures evokes a feeling of the basic order in our environment.”
