Joe edward Grant

Born in the town of Mexico, Missouri, Joe Edward Grant (1940-2022) studied art later in life. In 1977 he graduated with a BA from the California State College in Dominguez Hills and in 1980 he obtained a MFA from the Otis Art Institute of Parson’s School of Design in Los Angeles. During his time at Otis, Grant befriended Stuart Arends, who encouraged him to apply for the residency program, which he was awarded soon after. In 1996-97 Joe won an Individual Artist Award from the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. Between 1980 and 2008, he exhibited in about fifty solo and group exhibitions in California, New Mexico, Spain and Italy. Joe regularly showed at the Space Gallery in Los Angeles.

For the RAiR 40th Anniversary Show, Grant stated about his work: “The House shape has been an important image in my work for many years now. In the current investigations the house shape is placed in a vast environment with indications of landscape, light, and sky. The barrier between transparency and opacity is grayed and the house becomes a metaphor for our own strengths and frailties. A starting place for the beginnings of a journey.”
