James Emery Neo Trio to perform at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art

The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to welcome back James Emery’s Neo Trio who will be performing there on Saturday, August 23 at 7 PM.

Emery, co-founder of the pioneering chamber jazz ensemble The String Trio of New York, is a virtuoso guitarist and composer who has received international recognition for his distinctive and highly original approach to both improvisation and composition. Emery has been very active as a performer and composer on the international jazz and contemporary music scene since 1975 with over two dozen CDs as a leader or co-leader and live performances in more than 25 countries worldwide. His recordings have been described as “innovative and imaginative” and “utterly distinctive” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz, which selected his orchestral recording, Transformations, for its edition titled "The History of Jazz in the 1001 Best Albums.”

Joining Emery on bass will be John Funkhouser, and Alex Murzyn on saxophones.

Earlier this year Emery released his latest recording, Inner Drive. In 2024 he released Inside Outlier, of which noted jazz critic Glenn Astarita wrote "This album is a bold declaration from a musician who’s spent a lifetime honing his craft, not just a celebration of the guitar's possibilities but a showcase of Emery’s sheer musical genius.” Inside Outlier was selected as the #1 jazz record in 2024 at AllAboutJazz.com

Emery relocated to Santa Fe from New York in Spring 2022. Emery has been touring and recording worldwide for 45 years. A Guggenheim fellow, Emery has performed at renowned concert venues including Great Performers at Lincoln Center (NYC), Philharmonic Hall (Berlin), Royal Festival Hall (London) and many others.
