Daisy Craddock

Known for her evocative landscapes, Daisy Craddock (1949- ) was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She obtained her BA in Fine Arts in 1971 from Rhodes College, Memphis and her MFA in Painting from the University of Georgia, Athens in 1973. By 2018 Daisy exhibited in forty solo shows and over eighty-five group shows, most often in New York and in Tennessee. In 2002, she was awarded a New York Arts Recovery Grant by the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her work is in over thirty-five public collections, including the Tucson and the Georgia Museums of Art. Her work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, Art in America, and The New York Times, among several other publications.

About her work during her residency, Craddock stated: “I sometimes think of my work as being more about a state of mind than a particular place. Still, the notion of working within the genre of landscape is important to me. My paintings appear to be spontaneous but are usually quite calculated. I begin with small drawings which I refer to as the ‘real’ landscapes. These are done from life and it is on this scale that I work to develop a particular image or gesture. The subject of the paintings becomes what has ‘happened,’ both on a formal and psychological level, in the drawing. Usually an emotional situation will be suggested by the drawing which I work to expand on in the painting.”
